Born in Harrogate, Phil Swainston started playing rugby at Harrogate RFC and began his professional career at Otley.
Swainston joined the Leeds Academy as a teenager. The tighthead gained plenty of first team exposure for Leeds making 26 appearances in their final season in the Premiership before the side was relegated.
Swainston joined Wasps at the beginning of the 2012/13 season and soon became a regular name in the starting 15. He made 21 appearances for the Club in his first season and was named Man of the Match for his impressive form in the Wasps scrum against Leicester Tigers, his celebration from which earned him YouTube fame!
Following a string of impressive performances that season, Swainston was also called up into England Saxons squad training.
He was also nominated for Young Player of the Year at the Wasps End of Year Awards dinner with the likes of Elliot Daly and Billy Vunipola as a result of his form in his first season at Wasps.
In 2013/14, under the guidance of Dai Young, Phil Swainston was part of a successful front row and made 22 appearances.
Swainston's 2014/15 season was curtailed by injury, but he still made 10 appearances, taking his total to over 50 appearances for Wasps.
Last season Swainston made 16 appearances for Wasps adding his considerable experience to a now fearsome group of tight-heads including Marty Moore, Jake Cooper-Woolley and Lorenzo Cittadini.
