The AJ Bell Stadium Stadium Aviva Premiership As it happened

The heart-stopping finale was played out in slow motion at the end of a match extended beyond two hours following a lengthy stoppage for a late Danny Cipriani head injury.

It all started well for Wasps who built up a 17-point advantage through two converted Josh Bassett tries after Elliot Daly's early penalty.

But Rob Webber and Byron MacGinty responded for Sale before half-time and when Bryn Evans struck 43 seconds after the restart and AJ MacGinty landed a penalty, Sale were six points ahead.

Despite being down to 14 men after Cipriani's yellow card, Jimmy Gopperth struck a penalty and converted a Daly try to send the visitors into the closing minutes with a four-point advantage.

But the Sharks piled on the pressure in the closing stages and after James Haskell was sin-binned in desperate defence the hosts eventually worked Yarde into the corner to claim the points.

Wasps opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Daly stroked over a penalty from just inside the Sale half.

Two minutes later the England centre’s chip to the corner put Yarde under pressure and he was forced to carry the ball out. The visitors won the lineout and when the ball went wide Willie Le Roux created the space for Bassett to power his way over for a try which Gopperth converted.

As the match entered the second quarter Bassett went over for a second score direct from a lineout after slick handling and another telling contribution from Le Roux. Gopperth was again on target from the left touchline.

When Wasps conceded their first penalty of the game, five metres inside their own half, MacGinty opened Sale’s account, however as the half progressed the hosts put some phases together and asked some serious questions of Wasps’ defence.

Outstanding  breakdown work by Jack Willis caught the eye, before a storming burst by Matt Mullan relieved several minutes of pressure. However, the home side continued to press and were finally rewarded when Webber crashed between the posts three minutes before half-time.

McGinty’s conversion narrowed the gap to 17-10, after which the home No.10 exploited a turnover to send a perfectly placed kick towards the right corner where McGuigan gathered to claim a fine try.

This left Dai Young’s team with a 17-15 interval advantage, which was wiped out directly from the restart when Dan Robson's clearance kick was charged down by Evans who regathered to score.

MacGinty added three further points from the tee with a simple head-on penalty before Christian Wade’s fine break and perfectly-timed pass sent Daly skating to the corner.

Gopperth's fourth successful kick moved Wasps one point ahead, but Cipriani then saw yellow for a technical offence. MacGinty missed the subsequent penalty and after Wasps’ defence held firm during the sin-bin period Gopperth extended the visitors’ advantage to four points with a 40-metre penalty.

Sale spent the closing stages camped on the Wasps' line, and Haskell was sin-binned for a desperate intervention on his own line.

Faf de Klerk's race to the line from the subsequent scrum prompted a lengthy delay as his tackler Cipriani left the field on a stretcher.

When play finally resumed, Wasps defended their line heroically but ultimately ran out of numbers as Yarde clinched the spoils.
